September 3, 2024KEMRI and Nairobi County Government to Forge Strategic Partnership for Enhanced Healthcare and Research.
A high-level task force has been established to spearhead the development of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KEMRI and the Nairobi County Government. This strategic MoU aims to solidify and expand collaboration, harnessing the strengths of both institutions to address the evolving healthcare landscape in the region.
The task force was formed following a pivotal meeting on August 20th, 2024, at City Hall, where the KEMRI delegation, led by Dr. Abdullahi Ali, engaged in fruitful discussions with Governor H.E. Johnson Sakaja. The partnership seeks to create a comprehensive framework that integrates healthcare delivery with cutting-edge research, starting with the upscaling of Mbagathi Hospital into a Clinical Trials Research Platform.
The collaboration will in addition incorporate the other products and services offered by the two partners including the food handlers’ program and other critical public health initiatives hence ensuring a holistic approach to research strengthening and healthcare improvement.
Dr. Abdullahi emphasized KEMRI’s unparalleled expertise and the significant benefits this collaboration promises for Nairobi County. “This partnership offers immense potential. KEMRI brings world-class infrastructure and a team of globally recognized researchers in human health. Together, we can revolutionize service delivery, build capacity, and improve specialized care for our communities.”
Governor Sakaja echoed this enthusiasm, highlighting the transformative impact of integrating research with healthcare services. “Your visit couldn’t be timelier. Nairobi County boasts the highest number of healthcare facilities, yet none has fully integrated the research component. This partnership is a gamechanger, enabling us to better monitor, understand, and address the healthcare needs of our people while delivering specialized care.”
The KEMRI delegation included Board Director Dr. Damaris Maweu, Acting Director General Prof. Elijah Songok, Prof. Nelly Mugo, Dr. Damaris Matoke, Dr. Rose Bosire, Ms. Milkah Mwangi, Mr. Mahsen Abud, Dr. Benjamin Ngugi, and Mr. James Wodera.
Representing Nairobi County were CEC for Health Ms. Suzanne Silantoi, Mr. Michira Nyakaba, Mr. Hibrahim Otieno, Dr. Alexander Irungu, Dr. Norah Maore, Dr. Mogoi Peter, Dr. Ericah Koima, Mr. Martin Maitima, and Mr. Justin Muli.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards elevating healthcare standards and building resilient health systems that will serve Kenyans for generations to come.
