KEMRI Stakeholders meet to Review 2023-2028 Strategic Plan

The Institute held a public engagement with key internal and external stakeholders to review the KEMRI Strategic Plan 2023-2028 on the 7th March 2024. In order to effectively execute its mandate, this Strategic Plan will lay a firm foundation for development of innovative research products that will support realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

According to the Ag. Director General KEMRI, Dr. Maricianah Onono who officially opened the meeting , strategic planning is an integral part of the Institute as it paints the goals that need to be achieved in general and what the country should expect.

“It is truly an honor to inaugurate the external stakeholder review of KEMRI’s Strategic Plan 2023-2028 on behalf the KEMRI Director General, this new Strategic Plan not only builds upon the recent achievements of the Institute but also establishes a robust foundation for the development of research products crucial in supporting the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation
Agenda (BETA),” she pointed out.

The review process brought representatives from; Kenya Union of Domestic Hotels Educational Institutions Hospitals & Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), Kenya Institute of Primate Research (KIPRE), Public Service Commission (PSC), National Intelligence Service (NIS), Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) among others.

The collaborative workshop focused on strategic measures for advancing health research and enhancing research scientists’ capacity, fostering optimism for impactful initiatives aligned with our shared goals. Within the health sector, KEMRI has continued to provide leadership in research & development, shape national health research agenda, promote evidence- based policy formulation, monitor, and assess health trends as well as dealing with trans-boundary health threats and disease outbreaks.

Front row from left: Mr. Anthony Wachira, Dr. Damaris Matoke-Muhia, Dr. Maricianah Onono, Mr. Kalu Kitaba and Mr. Edwin Bett. the plan, situation analysis was undertaken using SWOT and PESTEL tools which identified key strategic issues that informed development of strategic goals and strategic objectives,” informed Director Strategy and Compliance, Mr. Edwin Bett and added, “Some of the key issues identified in the plan included the need to increase investment in research and development, adoption of new cutting-edge technologies, strengthening Knowledge management and knowledge translations, enhancing research partnerships and collaborations, upgrading research and support infrastructure, reengineering business processes and review of institutional legal framework to ensure KEMRI is established in its health law and Ethics”.

The KEMRI’s strategic plan 2023-2028 will guide the Institute for the next five years, keeping in mind that it has been aligned to support all members of staff in delivering health aspirations. It equally aligns with the institute’s vision which is “To be a Global Leader in Research for Human Health” and its mission, “To improve the quality of human health through research, innovation, capacity development and service delivery.”
