KEMRI TOPS AFRICA IN CONTRIBUTION TO HEALTHCARE

KEMRI’s continental dominance in contributions towards the general human health sector, has yet again been confirmed after Scimago Institutions Ranking (SIR) www.scimagoir.com has placed it top overall among 24 key ranked institutions in Africa.

Besides KEMRI, the others in the order of merit include: South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), the National Medical Research Institute (NIMRI) from Tanzania, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust, University Teaching Hospital (Zambia),  Groote Schuur Hospital (South Africa),

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (Kenya), Egyptian National Cancer Institute, Institut Pasteur de Tunis (Tunisia), Tygerberg Hospital (South Africa), University College Hospital, Ibadan (Nigeria), Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (Egypt), Assiut University Hospital (Egypt).

Others are Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt, Centre Hospitalier Ibn Sina Rabat (Morocco), Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Ibn Rochd Casablanca (Morocco), Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Farhat Hached de Sousse (Tunisia), Universite Hassiba BenBouali de Chlef (Algeria), Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital (Tunisia), Centre Hospitalier et Universitaire Hassan II Fes (Morocco), Hopital Militaire d’Instruction Mohammed V (Morocco), Hopital La Rabta (Tunisia), Habib Bourguiba Hopital (Tunisia) and Hopital Charles Nicolle from Tunisia.

In addition, the just published 2022 Scimago rankings place KEMRI an impressive ninth position among over 150 when its performance is measured among all the other sectors on the continent.

Other Kenyan institution making to this list include, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) ranked at position (12), World Agroforestry Centre Kenya (27), Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (40), International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (42), University of Nairobi (45), Egerton University (58), Kenyatta University (64),          Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (66) and Moi University (78).

It is instructive to note that the Institute has consistently registered impressive performance for the seven years in a row in the Scimago whose aim is to facilitate analysis of the scientific output and impact of institutions worldwide.

It also seeks to improve performances, excellence in research output, scientific leadership and international collaborations among others. At least, 8,084 institutions which include prestigious academic institutions such as the Harvard University, Chinese Academic of Sciences, National Institute of Health, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and U.S. Department of Health & Human Services have been ranked this year among others.
