The Africa Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) on Monday, 27th, May 2024 kicked off an assessment in KEMRI to determine the institute’s capacity as a designated Centre for Excellence in diagnostics for priority diseases on the continent.
The evaluation exercise was headed by the Africa CDC, Senior Technical Officer-Coordinator Diagnostics Access, Dr. Noah Fongwen and his colleague, the Senior Technical Officer, Pathogen Genomics, Mr. Abebaw Kebede. The two technical experts were received by the Ag. Director, Research and Development, Prof. Nelly Mugo on behalf of Ag. DG Prof. Elijah Songok and other senior scientific staff.
The objectives of the three-days exercise were among other areas to assess the level of readiness of the facilities for diagnostic evaluations using an elaborate checklist, assessing the availability and characterization of samples for priority diseases, and assessing the availability of processes for fresh sample collection and processing for field evaluation of diagnostic tests among others.

Hassan (CVR), Nicholas Mwikwabe (LSBB), Dr. Konongoi Limbaso (CVR) and Lucy Kanyara (LSBB).
If considered after the evaluation, KEMRI will join 12 other Centers of Excellence contributing positively to better
health outcomes in Africa.
