It was pomp and colour at the opening of the Pan-African Conference on Climate Change and Health as the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, launched the Kenya Climate Change and Health Strategy 2024–2029.
The landmark document charts a clear path to strengthen the country’s health systems and protect communities from the growing threats posed by climate change. The Strategy identifies seven priority areas aimed at building resilience and sustainability within the health sector.
It first calls for the adoption of clean energy and air quality improvements in health facilities through renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, and the use of energy-efficient technologies to reduce emissions and operational costs. It also promotes sustainable and climate resilient food systems that protect natural ecosystems and ensure access to safe and nutritious diets for all.
To safeguard water resources and promote hygiene, the plan integrates Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives with healthcare waste management. This will help prevent waterborne diseases, improve environmental conservation, and promote recycling and safe disposal practices. Regular health risk and vulnerability assessments, coupled with robust health education and early warning systems, will further enhance community awareness and preparedness for climate-related health emergencies.
Another critical focus is the development of climate resilient healthcare systems through cross-sectoral training, integrated disease surveillance, and infrastructure upgrades to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services during climate shocks. The Strategy also underscores the role of research, innovation, and policy development, embracing the One Health approach that links human, animal, and environmental well-being.
To ensure measurable progress, it advocates for transparency, accountability, and data-driven implementation, with clear performance indicators and coordinated governance mechanisms.
The launched, Kenya Climate Change and Health Strategy 2024–2029 marks a pivotal step in aligning the health sector with the nation’s broader climate goals. By embedding resilience, sustainability, and innovation at every level of the health system, Kenya is charting a bold course toward a healthier, more adaptive, and climate secure future for its people.
