On a crisp morning in Nairobi, thousands of runners gathered with excitement for the 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. This year’s event marked both two decades of running excellence and the beginning of the next 20 years of this celebrated race. Among the participants was a strong KEMRI team led by Ag. Director General Prof. Elijah Songok, who aimed to inspire and motivate with his presence. Accompanying him were key KEMRI leaders, including Director of Corporate Services (DCS) Mr. Jones Otuke, Ag. Deputy Director Centre for Geographic Medicine Research – Coast (CGMRC) Dr. Sophie Uyoga, Deputy Director Corporate Communications (DDCC) Mr. Davis Mkoji, Ag. Deputy Director of Commercial Enterprise Ms. Carolyne Wandera, Ag. Deputy Director, Finance & Accounts, Mr. Gabriel Kamau and Head of Security Mr. Elijah Nyabinge. Their combined support and enthusiasm added to the event’s high energy.
This year’s marathon targeted a registration of 23,000 runners and aimed to raise funds for the Futuremakers Initiative, a programme dedicated to empowering young entrepreneurs, particularly women. Each participant’s involvement extended beyond personal goals, contributing to job creation and skill-building opportunities for Kenya’s youth.
Amid cheers from supporters, KEMRI’s team moved with purpose, proudly showcasing their branded attire and embodying the teamwork and collaboration celebrated by the marathon. Entertainment zones along the route—filled with music, dance, and enthusiastic cheering squads— kept energy levels high, while strategically placed mobile emergency stations ensured safety throughout the race.
Reflecting on the marathon, KEMRI leaders expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort that made it possible. They emphasized the value of such events in fostering fitness, community spirit, and support for young entrepreneurs. Dr. Uyoga, representing CGMRC, extended appreciation for the strong turnout and looked forward to even greater representation from Kilifi in the future. Mr. Mkoji also acknowledged the exceptional work of the Corporate Communications team, led by Senior Corporate Communications Officer Stella Njung’e, whose meticulous organization helped ensure the event’s success.
As runners crossed the finish line after hours of competition, the atmosphere was filled with celebration and camaraderie. The KEMRI team gathered to mark their accomplishments, proud to have run for a cause that empowers future generations. This year’s marathon reinforced its role in fostering community engagement, promoting physical fitness, and providing essential support for transformative initiatives.
With KEMRI’s active involvement, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon once again succeeded in not only promoting health and wellness but also in championing a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
