Dr. Hoseah Miima Akala, Principal Research Scientist and Director of the Malaria Drug Resistance Program at KEMRI/Walter Reed Army Institute of Research – Africa, was named a 2024 Fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH). This prestigious recognition was announced at the ASTMH Annual Meeting held in New Orleans, where Dr. Akala was honored during the Opening Plenary Session.
As a newly inducted Fellow of ASTMH (FASTMH), Dr. Akala joins an elite group of global health leaders dedicated to advancing the field of tropical medicine. The recognition highlights his outstanding contributions to malaria drug resistance research and his commitment to strengthening public health interventions in Africa.
Additionally, Dr. Akala has been appointed as the Regional Representative for Africa (AFRO) within the ASTMH Committee on Global Health (ACGH). This new role places him at the forefront of shaping policies and strategies to combat tropical diseases across the continent.
Speaking about the recognition, Dr. Akala stated, “This recognition is not just personal but a reflection of the great work happening at KEMRI. It reaffirms our commitment to scientific excellence and global health leadership. I am honored to serve as Africa’s representative in ASTMH’s Global Health Committee and look forward to collaborating with experts worldwide to strengthen our response to infectious diseases.”
