KEMRI exhibits its research innovations at NIIC 2025.

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), led by the Director General, Prof. Elijah Songok, presented and exhibited its cutting-edge research innovations in the highly anticipated Nyanza International Investment Conference (NIIC) 2025, held from February 6th to 8th 2025. The event aimed to discuss strategies for advancing the region’s economic landscape.

The three-day event, themed “Nyanza Rising: Towards Economic Transformation for Socio-Economic Growth and Development,” brought together key stakeholders in innovation, investment, and development sector.

The opening ceremony was officiated by His Excellency, the Deputy President, Hon. Kithure Kindiki, who delivered insightful remarks on the significance of regional collaboration and innovation in driving socioeconomic transformation. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for investment, entrepreneurship, the blue economy, and innovation, particularly in the health sector.

 “The government remains steadfast in fostering an ecosystem where innovation thrives. This can be further enhanced by building stronger partnerships and collaborations among laborers, health researchers, product developers, and businesses. By strengthening ties between research institutions and the private sector, we can accelerate the development and accessibility of locally driven innovations, ultimately improving lives and bolstering economic resilience,” remarked Deputy President Hon. Kithure Kindiki.

The Institute’s exhibition featured an array of groundbreaking research outputs, with several scientists from the Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR) presenting their work. Senior Social Behavioral Research Scientist, Ms. Philister Adhiambo, from the HIV Research Department, highlighted groundbreaking HIV clinical trials that have led to innovative interventions. “As HIV/AIDS enters its fourth decade, researchers and scientists have tirelessly worked on user-friendly interventions to curb the epidemic while addressing challenges related to uptake and the specific needs of diverse populations. This has led to a healthier nation and a stronger economy,” she explained to the participants.

The conference attracted a diverse range of business investors and thought leaders, focusing on critical areas such as the commercialization of products and services, infrastructure, transport, energy, housing, and health. Plenary sessions highlighted the strategic role of innovation in driving Kenya’s economic growth, with experts from various sectors sharing their perspectives on contributing to the global economy.
