A delegation from the county government of Uasin Gishu, paid a visit to KEMRI to discuss the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which will mark the beginning of strengthened partnership between the county and the Institute. The agreement is set to open new doors for further collaboration in research, capacity building and strengthening healthcare systems.
The MoU is designed to tackle some of the most pressing health challenges in Uasin Gishu and its neighboring counties, with a special focus on sports health, mental health, lifestyle diseases, and non-communicable diseases. Through this, the experts will work to prevent and manage sports injuries, promote anti-doping awareness to our sports men and women and safeguard the wellbeing of athletes.

With increased mental health issues, the collaboration will seek to conduct research aimed at understanding its challenges and developing effective interventions. Additionally, the collaboration will delve into lifestylerelated conditions such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, while also addressing long-term illnesses like cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Ultimately, this agreement is about more than just research—it’s about transforming lives and building a healthier future for the region.
The MoU will support the expansion of the launched Sports Science Research Centre (SSRC), KEMRI’s 15th research centre, which is currently domiciled at Mezzanine, Daima Towers in Eldoret City.
During their visit, county officials toured KEMRI’s laboratory facilities to gain firsthand insight into ongoing research and diagnostic services. The delegation engaged with KEMRI scientists, discussing potential areas for collaboration and innovation.

KEMRI’s Acting Director General, Prof. Elijah Songok, emphasized the importance of collaboration with the county government stating, “We appreciate the strong relationship with the Governor’s Office and the commitment to making this project a reality. This partnership will not only strengthen research but also improve healthcare delivery for the people of Uasin Gishu and beyond.”
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Mr. Edward Sawe, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to resolving administrative bottlenecks. “Our priority is to finalize the land allocation process and ensure all legal requirements are met. We are working closely with all stakeholders to expedite the necessary approvals and move this project forward,”he said.
Officials also discussed long-term goals, including upgrading the Kapsoya Health center domiciled at the proposed grounds for the expansion of SSRC by transforming it into a research hospital. The facility will play a critical role in disease surveillance, diagnostics, and research collaborations at national and international levels. With Eldoret’s growing populace and its current status as a city and hub for athletics and academia, this collaboration will drive advancements in medical research and public health interventions.
