Dr. Simon Kariuki Named 2022 AAS Fellow

One of the Institute’s leading Malaria researchers, Dr. Simon Kariuki has been elected as a 2022 Fellow of the prestigious African Academy of Sciences (AAS). Dr. Kariuki who is based at the Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR) join other eminent KEMRI scientists into the privileged AAS club after a series of reviews conducted at various levels.

The AAS Award is issued in recognition of excellence by scholars who have excelled in their arears of expertise and have made tremendous contribution to the advancement of the field to the African continent.

 Dr. Kariuki boosts of over 26 years’ experience in human health research focusing on the epidemiology and mechanisms of acquired immunity to malaria, mechanisms of antimalarial drug resistance, clinical trials, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation and capacity strengthening among others.

He is also a recipient of several ongoing research grants on diverse malaria research including the ongoing filed trial of the first-ever malaria vaccine, the RTS vaccine that has gradually been successfully introduced in  endemic-malaria areas in Western-Kenya regions.  

Dr. Kariuki is also the chair of the National Malaria Control Programme Operational Research Technical Working Group (TWG) and a member of other TWGs. Adding the this AAS feather to his titles, is a welcome gesture after the rigorous evaluation conducted by the AAS Membership Advisory Committees.
