KEMRI GRADUATE SCHOOL STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM JKUAT WITH VARIOUS AWARDS

Eight post graduate Students from KEMRI Graduate School under the KEMRI/JKUAT collaborative program successfully completed their studies. The eight comprising of 4 PhD and 4 MSc/MPH trainees were awarded their degrees during the 38^th JKUAT Graduation ceremony held at JKUAT Juja campus on 28^th June 2022. Below are names of the graduates including their thesis research titles and their supervisors.

Tabitha Nyawira Gitahi (Doctor of Philosophy in International Health): Evaluation of the psychosocial and clinical outcomes after life skills provision among prenatally HIV-infected older adolescents receiving care at Mbagathi Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. Supervisors: Prof. Kenneth Ngure and Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi.

Peter Kipkorir Koskei (Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology): Post-harvest knowledge, perceptions and practices by farmers and diversity of fusarium species and fumonisin contamination of Maize from Rift Valley and lower eastern regions of Kenya. Supervisors: Prof. Simon Karanja and Dr. Christine C. Bii

Pius Mutisya Kimani (Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology): The factors associated with prevalence of liver disease among sero positive HBV and AFB1 individuals in selected health facilities in Kitui and Makueni Counties, Kenya. Supervisors: Prof. Yeri Kombe, Prof. Charles Mbakaya, Prof. Fred Wamunyokoli, and Dr. James K. Gathumbi.

Catherine Njeri Mwangi (Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Microbiology): Differential antibiotic resistance of Helicobacter Pylori in dyspeptic patients at Aga-Khan University Hospital: A study on genetic and phenotypic diversity among clinical isolates from gastric corpus and antrum. Supervisors: Prof. Gunturu Revathi, Dr. Andrew Nyerere, Prof. Samuel Kariuki, and Dr. Smita Devani.

In addition, the following students also graduated with master’s degree in various programmes:

1. Dennis Miriti – MSc. in Epidemiology. Oral Health Status and Its Associated Factors among the Youth in Igembe Sub-County, Meru County. Supervisors: Prof. Gideon Mutie Kikuvi, Dr. Benjamin M. Ngugi, and Dr. Dennis G. Magu.
2. Bridgit Wanjiku – MSc. in Public Health. Safety. Efficacy and acceptability of praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium in pre-school children of Kwale County, Kenya. Supervisors: Amos K. Mbugua, Jimmy H. Kihara, Murima Ng’ang’a, and Doris W. Njomo.
3. Yvonne Mukami – MSc. in Medical Virology. Serological Evidence of Chikungunya Virus Infection among Suspected Measles Cases in Selected Regions of Kenya: 2008–2014. Supervisors: Peter Borus, Rosemary Nzunza, Victor Ofula, Edith Chepkorir, Rebecca Waihenya, Rosemary Sang.
4. Paul Mungai – MSc. in Molecular Medicine. In Vitro Anti-Proliferative Activity of Selected Plant Extracts Against Cervical and Prostate Cancer Cell Lines.
