TOP 20 LEAD RESEARCHERS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION IN RESOURCE MOBILIZATION

The Board of Directors and Management recognized and awarded 20 top lead researchers (Principal Investigators) with the highest funding in the last 3 years at a ceremony held at a Nairobi Hotel on Tuesday 13th July 2022. The top scientists were able to mobilize over Kes. 7 billion for the advancement of human health research in Kenya and the region.

In his remarks the Board Chair, Dr. Daniel Mbinda who was joined by KEMRI Director General Prof. Sam Kariuki and other Board Directors, commended the team for their dedication towards the provision of human health solutions through research. “We are proud of your contribution towards providing solutions to the myriad health problems in the country and we want to congratulate you, our distinguished scientist for placing the Institute in the global map…As the board, we pledge to continue supporting you to achieve even more,” he said. During the ceremony, the PIs and the board were joined by the management for a day-long consultative meeting where they discussed issues affecting research at the Institute and deliberated on the way forward.

At least 19 lead researchers who were awarded including Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi, Dr. Simon Kariuki, Dr. Eric Ochomo, Dr. Godfrey Momanyi Bigogo, Dr. Richard Omore, Dr. Videlis Nduba, Dr. Stephen Munga, Prof. Nelly Mugo and Dr. Simon Kariuki. Others are Dr. Victor Mudhune, Dr. Maricianah Onono, Dr. Bernard Arina, Prof. Sam Kariuki, Dr. Charles Mwandawiro, Dr. Philip Kwaro, Prof. Matilu Mwau, Dr. Maurice Odiere, Dr. Steve Wandiga, and Dr. Zachary Kwena.
Board of Directors present were Dr. Rebecca Kiptui, Dr. F. George Njoroge, Amb. Dr. Wenwa Odinga, Ms. Marsella Bahati, and Ms. Kanini Nthiga.

While the management team was represented by Mr. Anthony Wachira, Director Corporate Services, Dr. Kizito Lubano, Director Scientific Programmes, Partnerships and Grants, Mr. Martin Machira, Corporation Secretary and Director Legal Services, Dr. Festus Tolo, Deputy Director, Centre for Traditional Medicine and Drug Research (CTMDR), Dr. Benard Ogutu, Research Scientist at Centre for Clinical Research, and Mr. Davis Mkoji, Deputy Director, Corporate Communications.
