The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) was pleased to host participants of the EU-Africa PerMed project on June 11, 2025, for an engagement visit focused on practical insights on the institute’s milestone in precision medicine research. The visit was part of an international meeting organized by the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) under the EU-Africa PerMed initiative, held at Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club in Nairobi.
The EU-Africa PerMed project, funded by the European Commission, aims to foster collaboration between European and African countries in the development of a global agenda for Personalized Medicine. By supporting the active involvement of African institutions in the International Consortium for Personalized Medicine (ICPerMed), the project seeks to ensure that emerging medical research reflects the diverse health needs and populations across both continents.

KEMRI was identified as a key institution in Kenya implementing groundbreaking work in personalized medicine. During the tour, the visiting delegation led by Ms. Teresia Nyawira from NACOSTI had the opportunity to witness firsthand the Institute’s contributions to advancing precision medicine in Africa.
The Deputy Director Centre for Biotechnology Research (CBRD), Dr. Erick Lelo who represented the Acting Director General, Prof. Elijah Songok, welcomed the delegates and expressed appreciation for their visit. He reaffirmed the Institute’s dedication to collaborative research, emphasizing that the leadership continues to support its scientists in making precision medicine a reality for the Kenyan population and beyond. “We are honored to host you today and proud to showcase the work our scientists are doing in precision medicine. KEMRI’s leadership is fully committed to supporting innovations that respond to Kenya’s health priorities while contributing to the global research landscape,” he affirmed.
