Meru University seeks to partner with KEMRI

Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST) is keen to work with KEMRI to help the academic institution strengthen its bio-medical research training.

The University leadership, led by the Council Chairman, Prof. Bosire Mwebi, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo and six senior officials toured the Institute’s Central Laboratory Complex at KEMRI Headquarters on Tuesday, 19^th, October, 2021 and were impressed by KEMRI’s research infrastructure and capacity which they observed “was world class.” Prof. Bosire said the university would work closely with KEMRI to assist it seek to realize its dreams especially having received a grant of over Ksh. 60 million from the National Research Fund (NRF) to support its Science, Technology and Innovation ventures.

Others in the MUST delegation were Council Member and Chair of the Academic Committee, Mr. Waswa Wekesa, Dr. Frank Onyambu (Coordinator for Research), Prof. Simon Thuranira (Ag. DVC, Academics & Student Affairs), Dr. Amos Omamo (Director, Research Development & Extension Survey) and Legal Officer, Ms.Sharon Koskei.

The delegation was received by the KEMRI Board of Directors, Dr. Wenwa Odinga, Dr. Rebecca Kiptui and Ag. Director General Prof. Sam Kariuki. Others present were Directors, Evans Amukoye (Research & Development) and Prof. Elijah Songok (Research Capacity Building). Mr. Davis Mkoji (DD, Corporate Communications) Dr. James Kimotho from the Innovation and Technology Transfer Division and Ag. Deputy Director in charge of Grants Management, Mr. Vincent Okoth also graced the occasion.

Welcoming the delegation in KEMRI, Prof. Kariuki and the members of the Board of Directors present pledged to support the university areas of mutual interest that should be identified in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). He noted that KEMRI had a strong history in collaboration with a number of local and international academic institutions and looked forward to “even a more closer working relationship with MUST.”  For instance, he pointed out the KEMRI has existing partnerships with Jomo Kenyatta of University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and University of Nairobi among others.
