Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation), a Pan-African, non-profit, public charitable organization created to support, strengthen, and promote science and innovation in Africa is seeking to collaborate with the Institute on matters research for health.
Through its CEO and Board Secretary, Prof. Tom Kariuki, SFA Foundation expressed the desire for partnership during a courtesy call on Ag. Director General, Prof. Elijah Songok last Tuesday, 30th April 2024 at KEMRI Headquarters in Nairobi.
Prof. Kariuki and his delegation who were well received noted that the two institutions not only boast of experienced team of scientists and professionals in their own right, but were also African and global leaders that enjoy vast collaborations and partners.
Prof. Kariuki reflected on SAF’s eagerness to collaborate with KEMRI citing past joint projects and visibly conveying excitement on new prospects for mutual learning and collaboration between the two institutions for the benefit of communities not just in Kenya and Africa, but throughout the world.
On his part, Prof. Songok pointed out that the overture by SFA Foundation was both timely and welcome as it coincides with the strategic direction the Institute has taken and which is aptly reflected in the 2023 -2027 Strategic Plan.
Both teams were excited by the prospects of joint funding proposal initiation for research innovations, products development, and capacity building besides enhancing grants management portfolio among others.
“As an Institute, we are working towards sustainability, as such, we are exploring partnerships with Institutions for funding that actively targets innovations for diagnostics and product development,” informed Prof. Songok further adding, “we are working to strengthen our grants management to build a more resilient system in the ever-changing funding landscape”.
“KEMRI and SAF have a shared history, we have previously funded a few projects and we are here to explore how as funders we can further plug into the good work you are doing. From these discussions, I am delighted to note that we indeed can do so much together and learn from each other,” animated Prof. Kariuki.
The SAF delegation also comprised the Head of Programme SAF, Dr. Moses Alobo and Chief Scientific Program Officer, Dr. Evelyn Gitau.
While the Ag. Director Research Capacity Building, Dr. Martin Bundi, Ag. Deputy Director Public Health and Health Research Programme, Dr. Rose Bosire, Ag. Deputy Director Biotechnology Programme, Dr. Damaris Matoke-Muhia and Ag. Deputy Director Corporate communications Mr. Davis Mkoji accompanied Prof. Songok at the meeting.
