The Institute and the National Intelligence and Research University (NIRU) have agreed to explore areas of mutual collaboration in human health research. The two organizations agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), that will formalize this important collaborative agreement that will outline specific areas of collaboration, formalize objectives, and define the roadmap for implementing the proposed partnership that would cover advanced research, grants acquisition, capacity building, biosafety, and biodefense.
This was cemented during a courtesy call by the NIRU Vice Chairman, Dr. James Kibon and his delegation on DG, KEMRI Prof. Elijah Songok on Monday, 20th January 2025, at KEMRI Headquarters Board room.

By harnessing the power of partnership and a shared vision, we are paving the way for innovative solutions that will contribute to a safer and healthier world.”

A central theme of the discussions was the shared commitment to advancing biosafety and biodefense solutions. The two institutions emphasized the importance of capacity building through strategic initiatives, including joint training programmes designed to equip researchers and practitioners with advanced skills. Plans were also outlined for knowledge exchange programmes that would foster cross-institutional learning, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and strengthen institutional capabilities to address emerging global challenges.



In addition to capacity building, the partnership will focus on identifying and pursuing opportunities to secure competitive research grants. These grants will support the development of cutting-edge projects in biosafety and biodefense, enabling both institutions to contribute to groundbreaking innovations. This multifaceted approach underscores the commitment of KEMRI and NIRU to tackling complex public health and security issues while ensuring sustainability and scalability of their initiatives.
Prof. Songok expressed gratitude to the Dr. Kibon and the entire NIRU delegation for choosing to engage with KEMRI.
