KEMRI Leads Successful SHA Rapid Results Initiative in Nandi County.

A team from the Institute recently concluded a week-long Social Health Authority (SHA) Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) across Nandi Hills, Terik, and Kapchorua Wards in Nandi County. The initiative aimed to raise public awareness, promote household registrations for SHA, and monitor progress toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya.

The initiative’s public sensitization efforts yielded remarkable results, doubling the SHA registration rates in the targeted wards. This success highlights the growing community awareness of the importance of accessing affordable healthcare services.

To sustain and upscale the project 100 SHA Uptake registration campaign, 33 additional Community Health Promoters (CHPs) from Kapchorua Ward were trained at the Ainapng’etuny AIC Church. The training was facilitated by KEMRI’s Dr. Joseph Mutai and Mr. Gideon Koech, alongside Nandi County and SHA officers, with an aim to equip CHPs with comprehensive information on SHA to ensure effective house-to-house registrations. By integrating CHPs, the initiative reinforces the pivotal role of grassroots health workers in achieving equitable healthcare access. Local leadership, including the area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Richard Bett, attended the sessions. “Access to affordable healthcare is the foundation of a thriving society. A healthy family builds a healthy community, a healthy community nurtures a healthy nation, and a healthy nation drives productivity and prosperity,” remarked Mr. Bett during the event, emphasizing the broader impact of these initiatives.

At a similar exercise at Somoei Boys late last year, the Ag Director General (DG), Prof. Elijah Songok, emphasized, “Grassroots mobilization is key to achieving equitable healthcare access. By empowering communities and involving local health promoters, we ensure that every household is reached, leaving no one behind on our journey toward Universal Health Coverage.”

The KEMRI team also worked closely with public health officials and local leaders to engage residents across various locations. CHPs employed innovative mobilization strategies, including chiefs’ barazas and small group meetings at tea estates. These sessions provided critical information about SHA’s benefits and gave community members the opportunity to raise questions and voice concerns. “These mobilization strategies have been instrumental in engaging residents and raising awareness about the importance of healthcare access. Most importantly, they’ve created avenues to onboard more community members into SHA,” said Mr. Gideon Koech.

The initiative was also well-received by Nandi County leadership during a visit to the Maternal and Child Health Unit at Meteitei Sub-County Hospital. Representing KEMRI’s Director General, Dr. Joseph Mutai joined Deputy Governor H.E. Dr. Yulita Mitei and County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Dr. Angeline Kirui, to assess the unit’s operations. Dr. Mitei commended KEMRI’s leadership in driving SHA registration, acknowledging its vital role in strengthening healthcare delivery for mothers and children in Nandi County.

“SHA is a game-changer for our communities and especially for maternal and child healthcare. I would like to recognize and appreciate KEMRI for their leadership and commitment in ensuring we attain the 100 percent registration as a county,” animated Dr. Mitei KEMRI’S Ms. Annette Miriti sensitizing the residents

KEMRI’s SHA initiatives in Nandi County are part of a broader strategy to increase public awareness and participation in SHA programs. These efforts follow similar efforts in Baringo and Narok Counties in November and December 2024, respectively, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access and awareness nationwide.

“The Rapid Results Initiative has proven to be a crucial step in our journey toward achieving 100 percent SHA registration. I believe that this approach can be useful in addressing public health concerns. While carrying out this exercise, we have also identified several public health concerns that require attention, to safeguard the health of our communities,” stated Dr. Mutai.

The KEMRI team was led by Dr. Mutai and Mr. Gideon and included, Ms. Annette Miriti, Ms. Fridah chepng’eno, Ms. Gladwell Jegemei , Mr. Peter Tiriyo, Mr. Vincent Kirui and Ms. Stella Njung’e.
