The Institute’s Peer Review Implementation Committee held a two-day workshop on the 26th–27th May 2025 with the aim of developing a structured plan for implementing key recommendations from the recent Peer Review Report. This effort forms part of a broader ten-year vision to strengthen and consolidate KEMRI’s position as a premier centre of research excellence with enhanced impact both nationally and globally.
The meeting marks a pivotal step toward strengthening KEMRI’s research systems, with the goal of achieving lasting health and economic impact for Kenya and the wider region.
During the meeting, committee members led by Ag. Director Research and Development, Prof. Nelly Mugo reviewed the Peer Review Report in detail and engaged in a strategic recommendation exercise. The focus was on identifying actionable items that can be implemented in the short, mid, and long term as well as the clear way forward. The plan being developed includes clearly defined milestones, timelines, responsible implementers, and monitoring indicators to ensure accountability and progress.

One of the core elements of the plan is the creation of an implementation matrix, which will serve as a roadmap for tracking activities and ensuring alignment with institutional goals. The committee also examined the budgetary implications of each recommendation, exploring potential internal and external funding sources. Success, however, will rely not only on technical planning but also on strong institutional leadership, collaboration among KEMRI staff and stakeholders, and committed support from the government.
Speaking during the session, Prof. Mugo emphasized the importance of strategic action, inclusive leadership, and shared responsibility in realizing the committee’s mandate. “We are not just developing a plan; we are shaping the future of research in Kenya. This process demands more than good intentions, it requires clarity of vision, unity of purpose, and consistent commitment across all levels of the Institute. Our success will depend on our ability to work together, stay accountable to the goals we set, and remain focused on the long-term transformation that will position KEMRI as a true centre of excellence in health research,” Prof. Mugo emphasized.
If successfully implemented, the recommendations will elevate KEMRI’s research capabilities and position it as a hub for evidence-based policy making and public health innovation. The Peer Review Implementation Committee is expected to play a continuous role in monitoring progress and ensuring that the vision outlined in the report becomes a reality.
