Call for More Investment in Research & Development for Kenya’s Health Future
April 13, 2026KEMRI’s Spotlight as World Health Day Aligns Timing and Purpose
By Dr. Robert Onsare.
In a rare but welcome convergence of timing and purpose, the 2026 World Health Day cast a spotlight on the Kenya
Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) as a pivotal force in advancing global health outcomes.
Marked by the rallying call, “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” this year’s theme celebrates the transformative
power of evidence-based innovation and underscores theurgency of collective action in an increasingly interconnected
world.
This campaign is a call to action to prioritize scientific integrity, foster cross-border collaboration, and fully embrace the One Health approach to safeguard the wellbeing of people, animals, and our environment.
In an era of rapid technological change and emerging biological threats, science remains our most reliable compass. From the development of next-generation vaccines to the use of AI in predicting disease outbreaks, scientific innovation has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in public health. Standing with science means:
- Evidence-Based Policy: Ensuring that public health decisions are grounded in rigorous research rather than political expediency.
- Global Solidarity: Sharing data, resources, and expertise across borders to ensure that health innovations reach the most vulnerable populations.
- Public Trust: Rebuilding the bridge between the scientific community and the public through transparent communication and community engagement
The 2026 theme places a heavy emphasis on the One Health paradigm. Recognizing that human health is inextricably linked to the health of animals and the environment, this approach seeks to address health threats at their source. Whether it is managing zoonotic diseases (those jumping from animals to humans), tackling antimicrobial resistance, or mitigating the health impacts of climate change, a siloed approach is no longer sufficient.
KEMRI’s robust contribution as a premier research institution is at the heart of Africa’s contribution to this global movement. The Institute has for years been instrumental in translating the “Stand with Science” mantra into tangible life-saving actions.
KEMRI’s dedicated One Health Programme serves as a model for regional and international cooperation. integrating human and veterinary medicine with environmental science, KEMRI is actively addressing some of the most pressing health challenges in East Africa.
Through Zoonotic Disease Surveillance, researchers at KEMRI work at the front lines of the human-animal interface, monitoring pathogens in livestock and wildlife to prevent the next pandemic before it starts.
The Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research recognizes that AMR is a “silent pandemic,” and has attracted extensive studies on how resistant bacteria move between farms, water sources, and hospitals, providing the data needed to develop effective stewardship programs.
The Climate-Health Nexus sees the Institute pioneering research into how changing weather patterns in Kenya affect the spread of vector-borne diseases like Malaria and Rift Valley Fever, allowing for better-informed public health preparedness.
True to the theme “Together for Health,” KEMRI’s success is built on a foundation of international partnerships. By
collaborating with organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and various global research universities, KEMRI ensures that Kenyan science is both world-class and locally relevant. These partnerships facilitate the exchange of high-tech diagnostic tools and the training of the next generation of African scientists, ensuring that the “Stand with Science” movement has a sustainable future.
As we celebrate World Health Day 2026, let us recommit to the values of collaboration and scientific rigor. Whether you are a policymaker, a healthcare professional, or a concerned citizen, your role is vital.
- Advocate for increased funding for scientific research.
- Support local institutions like KEMRI that are doing the hard work of protecting our communities.
- Adopt a One Health mindset by recognizing how our daily choices impact the planet and the creatures we share it with.
Together, guided by science and united in purpose, we can build a healthier, more resilient world for generations
to come.
